bipolar awareness

what is it?

Bipolar disorder is a mental condition characterized by extreme alterations in one's mood. It is divided into two stages: manic episodes and depressive ones.

Mania:

  • increased energy

  • constant euphoria/joy

  • impulsivity

  • decreased need for sleep

Depression:

  • persistent emotions of despair

  • constant defeat

  • low energy

  • trouble focusing

The extent and severity of the phases might vary, causing obstacles in relationships with others and daily activities.

common questions

Are bipolar individuals violent?

Not necessarily. During mania, they are prone to agitation. However, more often than not, bipolar people are not aggressive.

Can bipolar people function in society?

Yes, they can. Individuals with bipolar disorder can hold down jobs and form relationships, however, it is more difficult for them.

Do they need to be hospitalized during mania/depression?

Sometimes that is the case. Unfortunately, depressive episodes can trigger suicide attempts which can lead to hospitalization. Hallucinations or harmful behaviors can happen during mania, which is why sometimes bipolar people need to be stabilized medically for it. However, this is not always the case. Remember that it is different for every person.
